ACCOMMODATION
In questions of accommodation in Pécs,international students have two basic options. They may indicate their intention of staying in a hostel room on application, or seek alternative accommodation on arrival.
STUDENT HOSTEL ACCOMMODATION
It is a straightforward option for incomers to reserve a place in a hostel room on application.
1. Recently a brand new housing facility (Boszorkany Dormitory) was opened for international exchange students as well. We make every effort to secure rooms for the majority of the incoming international students here. There are appr. 100 beds in 4 person appartments with two 2 person bedrooms/appartment allocated for international students here. Each appartment has private bathroom. Monthly price of accommodation is the equivalent amount of 130 USD in hungarian currency/person. Payment must be made by postal order at the beginning of each month or may optionally be paid in full for the entire period. Postal orders can be obtained from the ERASMUS Office. A HUF 10.000 cash deposit needs to be paid on registration to the hostel which will be repaid in accordance with the house rules of the hostel on checking out.
2. The student hostel (Szántó Kollégium) has also been renovated during the 2010/2011 academic year. Two double bedrooms share one bathroom in this recently upgraded dormitory. Szántó Kollégium is located in a quiet, residential area of Pécs. The faculties of the University as well as the city centre are fairly accessible from here, only a short bus journey away. A reasonable contigent of rooms are allocated here for international students depending on the demands and possibilities. We might not offer a room for every single international student due to the generally large demand! The rooms are fully furnished and contain a washbasin. Bedclothes are supplied. Monthly price of accommodation is the equivalent amount of 130 USD in hungarian currency/person.
Besides, although it is a general preference of students to have a room of their own, we believe in the importance of the additional multi-cultural experience that results from incomers of different nationalities sharing a room in an environment that is equally unfamiliar for them.

MEALS
Boszorkany Dormitory has a student canteen on the groundfloor, where students can eat relatively cheap. They can choose among several dishes or menus. Average cost of a menu lunch is between 700 - 1000 HUF. Most faculties/schools has its own student restaurants. In the vicinity of both dormitories student can find super markets where they can purchase basic food products. Credit cards are acceptable in almost all supermarkets. ATM machines are to be found in all dormitories and campuses.
RENTED ACCOMMODATION
For incoming students who demand superior quality accommodation, rented flats are an alternative. Although renting a flat does involve an element of risk and uncertainty, it can provide some students with the peace, comfort and privacy they require. The Central Student Service Bureau (Központi Szolgáltató Iroda - KÖSZI) has a large database of accommodations available for rent. Prices range between approximately HUF 50,000-70,000 (app. EUR 200) for a furnished flat with gas heating for two persons that is fairly near to the city centre and/or faculties of the University.

VISA/residence permit
Students coming from the countries of the European Union do not need to get a visa from the Hungarian Embassy of their home countries. Once in Pécs, the only bureaucratic arrangement necessary is getting registered at the County Immigration Bureau and obtaining a residence certification. To get this document you will need a certificate about your scholarship or tuition waiver, a health insurance (Attention: European Health Insurance Card is not acceptable) and a statement of your bank account. A Faculty co-ordinator or a delegate from the Faculty will accompany students and help them make these simple arrangements.
Insurance
You need an insurance cover for various eventualities, like accidents, losses, diseases, etc. A full coverage general health insurance for Hungary is a prerequisite for the registration at any Faculty of the University. Beside others, Generali-Providencia Insurance Company offers a 6/12 months health insurance policy for students. The University strongly recommends you this health insurance policy because of its simpler and faster administration and well-arranged medical treatment. According to the insurance of Generali-Providencia, medical care is provided by the doctors of the University (hospital). The insurance is valid only in Hungary and the premium is HUF equivalent of about USD 150 (EUR 125) per semester and per person (student). It is useful to know that if you fall ill, first aid are free for foreigners, but you will be billed for any further treatment. In emergency cases you can contact the physician on duty at the clinic in Lánc utca (tel: 214-347) between 5pm and 6 am on weekdays and from 7 am on Saturday to 7 am on Monday. Most medications are available in Hungary, and a lot of them are much cheaper when prescribed by a physician. You can find more than 30 pharmacies around the city.
Arrival
From most European countries, the easiest way of reaching Hungary is by plane, since flying is fast, comfortable and once you have checked in it is virtually impossible to get lost. There are flights from all over the world to Budapest, the capital of Hungary.
After landing in Budapest Ferihegy II terminal the real adventure begins. You will find an "AIRPORT MINIBUS" office at both terminals. We strongly advise you to take an "AIRPORT MINIBUS" shuttle and not a taxi. "AIRPORT MINIBUS" will cost you 5,000 HUF (approximately €12-15/ $10-12) and it takes you wherever you want to go in Budapest. (You should register to this service at least 24 hours before. Phone: +36 1 296 8555). If you want to travel to Pécs right away, ask "AIRPORT MINIBUS" to take you to „KELETI PÁLYAUDVAR" (Eastern Railway Station).
If you would like to save up time choose the Mistral Minibus (www.mistral-minibus.hu, online booking is possible). This is a door to door service directly from the Budapest Airport to any address in Pecs. 15.000 HUF (app. €65 / $60).
How to get to Pécs?
The most convenient way of travelling from Budapest to Pécs is by an Inter-City train. At the website http://elvira.mav-start.hu/elvira.dll/xsl2/index?language=2you can find the IC timetable. Unfortunately, when first travelling from Budapest to Pécs you are not entitled to a student discount because you don't yet hold a Hungarian Student Identity Card at that time. (The International Student Identity Card won't do.) Thus, you have to pay full fare; a 2nd class ticket with seat reservation will cost about 5,000 HUF (approx. €18). You are advised not to take a regular train instead of an IC even if it leaves somewhat earlier because IC's are much faster and more comfortable than regular trains.
If you let us know the time of your arrival, you will be picked up at the railway station by students, who speak foreign languages and who will take you to your accommodation. Don't forget: ESN Local Section - mentor service!
